Home Reading Bags

Today our home reading and home work bags went home for the first time. The purpose of our home work is to build strong work habits in preparation for grade one, to reinforce skills learned in class and to provide some extra practice with our letter and sound knowledge. The Kinders are very excited, they feel like 'big kids' now that they have their own home work bags.

These bags will be sent home every Monday with a new book and some letter and phonological practice for students to do. Please return the bags with their books on Thursday.  Please spend about 10 min on these jobs each night until they are completed. There is no need to spend lots of time on this.

We worked on the letter Aa last week in order to create a sample for parents so that you can see how we do this work. If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an email.

We also made a video this morning explaining the process.

Enjoy!

The Story of Guck the Duck

This week I shared the story of Guck the Duck with the class. They loved it so much that they asked me to tell it at least three times each day. This morning we made a video so they can listen to it whenever they want. Enjoy!

Puzzles

We worked as a team to solve this puzzle. We looked for straight edges for the border, looked for patterns to help us, and turned pieces to figure out where they fit. It was lots of fun!

This was a great opportunity to develop problem-solving skills, cooperation and spatial awareness. Puzzles are a popular activity during play centres.

Representing Numbers to Ten

This week during discovery centres we are practicing our counting and representing numbers in different ways. Here we see that students have represented the number 6 in 7 different ways!

Pyjamas and Storytime

Cuddling up on pajama day, listening to a story read by Al Gore.

St Patrick's Day

Today we celebrated St Patrick's Day in kindergarten. As you probably already know, Thomas the Leprachaun has been visiting our classroom from time to time over the last few weeks. Today he made us Leprachaun juice and cupcakes. It was a delicious treat.
Thomas also sent us some letters, and a note to say sorry for making such a huge mess in the classroom while he was searching for his gold!

See you next year, Thomas!

100 Days at School

On February 17th we celebrated 100 Days at School. For the Kinders it marked not only 100 days at school but their first 100 days in school ever!

We enjoyed special centres celebrating 100.

The Kinders also received certificates to mark their first 100 days in school.

Happy 100 Day!

Kindness Week: Crazy, colourful and SMELLY socks!

We read Smelly Socks by Robert Munsch today. We all wore our colourful, crazy socks. Thank goodness they didn't smell like the socks in the story! Phew!

Treats for Teachers

After we baked the cookies the Kinders, with the help of their  buddies, decorated the cookies for teachers. Once they were ready they surprised the staff at Voyageur with a special treat!

A big thanks to Mrs Mikkelsen for taking these great pictures!

Thank you to our Volunteers!

Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who helped out with our special projects, crafting, baking and Christmas concert. I really appreciate your support!

Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock inspired us to paint. He was an American painter. When we looked at his paintings we noticed that he used lots of colour. He used some primary colours and some others too.
We read that when he would paint only he would know when the painting was done. We did that when we were painting too. We made sure to put the finishing touches on our pieces.

We hope you enjoy our work.

To make this painting we used primary colours; red, yellow and blue. We used paint brushes to splat the paint on. Then we used our hands to swish and swirl the paint. Everyone added one swish or swirl.
When we swished the paint we noticed the colours mixed and made new colours. They made secondary colours, green, purple and orange.

To make this painting we used paint, marbles, paint brushes and spoons. We used primary colours; red, yellow and blue.
We splattered and splashed the paint on. Then we rolled and swished the marbles around and we added a little bit of white at the end.
